President Mr Christopher Adey

.

Christopher Adey initially trained as a violinist with the legendary Manoug Parikian at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and then joined Sir John Barbirolli’s Halle Orchestra, and later the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

His conducting debut in 1973 led immediately to his appointment as Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has appeared with orchestras throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Canada and South Africa. Among his many hundreds of broadcast performances was the first complete cycle of Martinu Symphonies for the BBC.

A specialist in orchestral training since early in his career, Christopher Adey has always maintained a strong commitment to working with youth and student orchestras. A Professor of Conducting at the Royal College of Music in London from 1979 – 92, he remains in constant demand at conservatoires throughout the United Kingdom and elsewhere. His book, ‘Orchestral Performance – A Guide for Conductors and Players’ was published by Faber and Faber in 1998 and has become a standard work.

With a repertoire exceeding 1,400 orchestral works, he currently holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor to a number of orchestras and is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra.

Holder of the Czech Commemorative Medal for his services to Czech music, Christopher Adey has also been accorded Honorary Fellowships from both the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music in London as well as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Among his former students is the Conservatory Orchestra’s Music Director, Chan Tze Law.

Christopher Adey conducted the Southend Symphony Orchestra 1971 - 1974 and was awarded presidentship of the orcheastra at the AGM in 1976.

Mr Adey returned to conduct the orchestra in February1991, as part of our 70th Anniversary celebratory season, for a memorable concert when we performed Tchaikovsky Symphony No 4, Beethoven Piano Conceto No 1 (soloist Antoine Mitchell) and Berlioz Les Franc Juges at the Belfairs School, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
